Project at a glance
Objective: The OptimRES project aims to facilitate the transition towards a climate-neutral economy by addressing the critical operational challenges imposed by the unpredictable nature of renewable energy sources (RES). The project will develop and implement advanced tools to optimize the deployment and operation of RES, including Wind and Photovoltaic (PV) power plants, and Battery Storage Systems (BSS) to maximize profitability and sustainability.
Key Goals:
- Optimal Planning Tool:
- Develop a tool to identify the optimal size of hybrid RES-BESS sites.
- Maximize the investment rate of return for new RES-BESS installations.
- Intelligent Bidding Tool:
- Create a tool for RES/BESS owners to make informed decisions in the day-ahead electricity market.
- Account for uncertainties to maximize profit and extend the lifetime of BESS.
- Multi-Layer Real-Time Controller: Develop two adaptive protection schemes for:
- Formulate a real-time control system using a multi-forecasting model predictive control approach.
- Optimize the operation of RES-BESS plants for maximum profit in the balancing market.
The planning, bidding, and control tools will be integrated into the OptimRES web-based platform, specifically designed for managing RES sites. The project outputs will be demonstrated and evaluated at two pilot sites – a Wind-BESS plant and a Photovoltaic-BESS plant – with the aim of achieving high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) products.
Impact:
- Enhance the viability and competitiveness of green investments.
- Enable higher penetration of RES with significant environmental benefits.
- Increase market competitiveness and research excellence of the consortium.
- Contribute to the green transition of energy systems.
Key results and demonstration
The Wind-PV-BSS pilot plant of the project is already in operation. The real-time and historical operation of the pilot plan regarding its energy performance is openly available to the public through the WiseWire User Interface Portal specifically designed for the OptimRES project.
Consortium
The project’s consortium consists of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, as the coordinator, the H. Wise Wire Energy Solutions Ltd, and the T.P. Aeolian Dynamics Ltd.
Sponsors
The OptimRES project is supported by the Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation under grant agreement CODEVELOP-REPowerEU/1223/0097 (OptimRES), through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU initiative and the Recovery and Resilience Plan of Cyprus (Cyprus – Tomorrow).
