Project at a glance

Objective: The GridGnosis project aims to enhance the reliability and integrity of modern power systems by addressing the increasing challenges posed by rising electricity demand and the greater integration of renewable energy sources. The project focuses on developing a robust real-time monitoring and protection platform to prevent faults that could lead to regional or total blackouts.

Key Goals:

  1. Real-Time Monitoring: Utilize Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) to accurately estimate transmission line parameters, power system states, and grid inertia.
  1. Fault Localization and Classification: Implement advanced methodologies to enhance operator situational awareness and expedite system restoration.
  1. Adaptive Protection Schemes: Develop two adaptive protection schemes for:
    • Distance Protection: Dynamically update relay settings based on current line parameters.
    • Underfrequency Protection: Adjust feeder disconnection priorities according to inertia and loading conditions.

The GridGnosis proposes a holistic solution by integrating these capabilities into an innovative platform that leverages real-time data from PMUs. The GridGnosis platform will be rigorously tested and demonstrated in an operational environment using PMU measurements from the Cyprus power transmission system.

Impact:

The GridGnosis project will significantly improve grid reliability by providing timely fault detection and adaptive protection, ensuring the stability and integrity of power systems under growing demand and high renewable energy integration.

Consortium

The project’s consortium consists of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, as the coordinator, the H. Wise Wire Energy Solutions Ltd, and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.
