About the project

The GridEye project delivers a holistic solution for ensuring accurate situational awareness and enabling effective line protection, addressing the needs of Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to manage grid operations optimally while maintaining grid integrity and stability.

Transmission line parameters, typically considered time-invariant, are often calculated based on manufacturers’ data and indicative line distances. This approach can introduce errors compared to the actual line configuration and overlook factors like environmental conditions and modeling inaccuracies, negatively impacting situational awareness and decision-making.

GridEye tackles these issues by developing methodologies for online estimation of transmission line parameters to enhance grid protection reliability. It provides periodic updates to distance protection systems settings, reflecting dynamic variations influenced by environmental and grid operating conditions. Additionally, it introduces innovative fault localization and classification using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), improving operator awareness and accelerating system restoration. The project leverages Synchronized Measurement Technology (SMT) for high-resolution phasor measurements. The GridEye tool will integrate the the novel methods as a software solution that will be validated and demonstrated in Cyprus’s power system.

Applying GridEye offers socio-economic and environmental benefits: reducing the risk for large blackouts, saving costs for utilities and consumers to restore grid after faults, and supporting renewable energy sources integration without compromising protection system reliability.

Consortium

The project’s consortium consists of the H. Wise Wire Energy Solutions Ltd, as the coordinator, and the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus (University of Cyprus).

Sponsors

The GridEye project has received funding from the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) of Cyprus through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (NextGenerationEU) under the grant agreement ENTERPRISES/ENERGY/1123/0015.
